Introducing...

Hi!  My name is Shantel.  I am currently studying to become a Dietitian and am Mommy to nearly 20 month old Grace.  I love experimenting in the kitchen and I am so excited to share my ideas with you.  At least twice a week I like to try to make something new, or try something different.  I choose things that are health promoting.  I experience the world through trying different cuisines and hope you will enjoy sharing with me.  Don't worry, Chocolate Chip Cookies are still my favorite food, I just love the science of Nutrition and how it all works in our bodies.  I will probably also share some of my experiences as a Dietetic Intern, as I finish my internship and get ready to take the Registration exam over the summer.  Now where to start...

I just spent the last few days at a Public Policy Workshop for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Political Action Committee.  It was my first time on "The Hill" and actually going into the Senate and the House.  The most valuable little nugget I learned was that there are so many bills out there that the Senators and Representatives do not even know about all of them.  The advocates (preferred word) bring light to bills that may have gone unnoticed.  So discussing the Treat and Reduce Obesity Act, for instance felt very important.  Congressmen only vote on bills that come across the floor, but if they've never heard of them, they will never make it to the floor.
